Why Fence Estimates Aren’t Always Apples to Apples
It’s easy to see a low price on a quote and think you’re getting a good deal — but what’s behind that number matters just as much (or more) than the number itself.
At Stand Strong Fencing, we often encourage prospective customers to bring us any competing estimate — because what appears to be the “same” fence on paper can actually vary widely when you dig into the details.
The Products and Design Matter
A good fence isn’t just about closing a gap — it’s about quality materials, proper engineering, and lasting value.
- Some quotes use lower-quality materials, thinner boards or posts, cheap hardware, or designs that cut corners. Those might save you money today but end up costing you down the line with warping, rot, instability, or frequent repairs.
- A quality fence uses sturdy materials, proper posts and footings (for example, a full bag of concrete per post), well-fitted panels or pickets, and hardware designed to hold up over time. That’s the kind of work we stand behind — and we believe you should know exactly what’s going in before you compare prices.
Warranties & What’s Covered
A price doesn’t tell the whole story. What happens when something goes wrong?
- Always look for both material warranties (from the manufacturer) and workmanship guarantees (from the installer).
- A low quote might skip or skimp on either — which could leave you stuck paying extra for repairs or replacements.
- At Stand Strong, every installation is backed by our workmanship guarantee — giving you confidence that we stand behind the quality of our work.
Quote Details — Not All Fences Are Equal
It’s not enough to compare just the overall price. What you need to check closely:
- What is included — Does the quote include everything: materials, posts, panels, hardware, gates (and gate size/number), concrete for posts, cleanup, site prep, disposal of old fence, permits, etc.?
- Fence dimensions and scope — Same “6 ft privacy fence” on two quotes might differ in panel spacing, post quality, gate size, or additional features.
- Site conditions and prep work — Things like sloping ground, uneven terrain, obstacles (trees, rocks), existing fence removal — all of these can affect time, labor, and cost. If one quote includes grading or removal and the other doesn’t, they’re not equal.
- Timeline and flexibility — When will the work start? How long will it take? Is there room for design adjustments? Are you getting a final fixed price or an estimate with many “to-be-determined” items?
Service, Insurance, and Professionalism Count
Fencing is more than panels and posts — it’s a full project that affects your property’s safety, appearance, and long-term value.
- Make sure your contractor is insured and licensed, and their crews are professional and trained — this helps protect both your property and you as a homeowner.
- Quality contractors won’t just install a fence and leave. They’ll handle permits, HOA approvals (if relevant), clean up the site, and communicate clearly from first contact through to final inspection.
- Look for transparency: a detailed, itemized quote; clear explanation of what’s included and what’s optional; and no surprises when it’s time to sign or pay.
Value Is More Than Price
Yes — price is important. But it’s rarely the full story.
When you compare estimates side-by-side, weigh not just the bottom line — but what you’re getting for that price: materials, craftsmanship, warranty, professional service, and long-term durability.
Choosing a fence isn’t just buying a barrier — it’s investing in the security, appearance, and future value of your property. A well-built fence adds real value — and peace of mind.
How to Use This Page
Before you accept any quote, take a moment to ask yourself:
- “Are we comparing the same type of fence — materials, dimensions, scope, and inclusions?”
- “Does the quote include everything — materials, labor, site prep, cleanup, gates, hardware, warranties, and any required permits?”
- “Has the installer laid out what kind of workmanship and follow-up service they guarantee?”
- “Is the lowest price just the starting point — or does it really deliver long-term quality and coverage?”
If you review estimates with these questions in mind, you’ll be better positioned to choose a fence that’s not only affordable — but durable, attractive, and worth the investment.
