Fence Staining in St. Charles, MO

Missouri weather is hard on wood. Humid summers, freeze-thaw winters, and long stretches of direct sun pull the color out of a cedar fence within a couple of seasons if nothing is protecting it. We stain and seal fences across St. Charles, MO and the surrounding county, on fences we built and fences we did not.

When to Stain a New Fence

Not right away. New pressure-treated lumber holds mill moisture, and stain applied to wet wood sits on the surface and peels off by the following spring. Depending on the season we install, that wait runs anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Cedar can usually take finish sooner. We tell you the window when we hand off the job, and we will come test the wood before we book the staining date.

Stain, Sealer, or Both

A clear sealer blocks water and does very little about UV. A semi-transparent stain does both, letting the grain show while pigment absorbs the sunlight that would otherwise grey the boards. Solid stain covers grain entirely and lasts longest, which makes sense on older fences with mismatched repairs. For most St. Charles cedar and pine fences we recommend semi-transparent, re-coated every three to five years.

What Our Process Looks Like

We wash the fence first, because stain applied over mildew and pollen locks the mess in. Anything loose gets scraped. Damaged pickets and failing posts get replaced before finish goes on, since it makes no sense to stain a board you will pull out next year. Then we apply by sprayer and back-brush so the product works into the grain instead of sitting on top of it.

Landscaping gets covered. Fresh stain does not belong on your hostas, and we clean up before we leave.

Timing Around Missouri Weather

Stain needs dry wood, moderate temperature, and no rain in the immediate forecast. Late spring and early fall are the reliable windows in St. Charles County. Mid-summer works if we start early, but surface temperature on a south-facing fence at two in the afternoon will flash the product before it can absorb. We schedule around it rather than fighting it. The National Weather Service St. Louis office forecast is what we watch when we set dates.

Fences We Stain

Cedar and pressure-treated pine are the bulk of what we finish. Both take stain well when they are prepped right. If you are still deciding on material for a new build, see our wood fencing page or compare privacy builds on the privacy fencing page. Vinyl and aluminum do not need stain at all, which is worth knowing before you commit.

What Drives the Price

Staining is quoted by linear footage and height, adjusted for condition. A three-year-old cedar fence that just needs a wash and a coat prices very differently from a fifteen-year-old run that needs brightening, board replacement, and two coats of solid stain. Fence style matters too: shadowbox and board-on-board have more surface area than a simple picket, so they take more product and more time. We walk the whole line before we quote so the number holds.

Questions Homeowners Ask

How often does a fence need re-staining in Missouri? Every three to five years for semi-transparent. South and west exposures go first.

Can you stain a fence that has never been finished? Yes, and grey weathered wood usually needs a brightener step before stain to open the surface back up.

Do you stain both sides? We quote both sides by default. Staining only your side leaves the back exposed and shortens the life of the boards.

How long before I can use the yard? Usually the same day. Pets and kids should stay clear until the surface is dry to the touch.
